The term can refer to the overall practice of producing music for various genres, or to the specific role of a producer who guides the project and coordinates contributors.

Stages typically include pre-production (arranging and planning), tracking (recording performances), editing (comping and timing), mixing (balancing levels and applying effects), and mastering (final tonal adjustment and preparation for distribution). Throughout, producers and engineers work to achieve artistic intent, sonic coherence, and suitable loudness and dynamics for distribution.

Tools and techniques: Digital audio workstations (DAWs) such as Ableton Live, Logic Pro, and Pro Tools are central, supported by software plug-ins and hardware synthesizers, microphones, and outboard gear. Techniques include multitrack recording, gain staging, equalization, compression, reverb, and creative processing.
