Muotomalleina is a design concept describing a set of form templates or shape models used to generate multiple variants of a product’s geometry while preserving core characteristics. The term comes from Finnish, combining muoto (shape) and malli (model) with the suffix -na, indicating a role or form.

In practice, muotomalleina are parametric templates stored in CAD systems or design libraries. They encode a family of geometries through adjustable parameters such as dimensions, curvature, thickness, and symmetry, allowing designers to explore alternatives quickly while maintaining shared features. They are commonly used in product design, architecture, and engineering workflows that employ parametric modeling and digital twin concepts.

Implementation typically involves constraint-based modeling, feature-based design, and controlled parameter ranges. Muotomalleina support standardization by enabling consistent interfaces and tolerances across variants, and they facilitate rapid prototyping and manufacturing planning, including 3D printing and injection-molding preparations.

Benefits include faster iteration, reduced manual modeling, and improved consistency; limitations include potential creativity bottlenecks if templates are overused and the need for careful parameter management to avoid incompatible geometries.
