Munntilstand

Munntilstand is a clinical term used primarily in Scandinavian contexts to describe the current condition of a patient’s oral cavity. Literally meaning “mouth state,” it denotes the oral status at a given time and serves to inform treatment planning and risk assessment in dental and medical records.

A muntilstand assessment typically encompasses several elements. Dentition status covers the presence and condition of natural teeth, as well as partial or complete edentulism and the placement of any prosthetic appliances. The record notes caries activity, condition of restorations, and periodontal health, along with mucosal integrity and any soft-tissue lesions. Functional aspects such as occlusion, jaw function, and the presence of dentures or implants are considered. Hygiene level and factors influencing oral health, including tobacco use, diabetes, and xerostomia, may also be recorded.

Assessment methods rely on clinical examination and, when needed, radiographs and patient history. The muntilstand description is used for treatment planning, prior to procedures where oral health can impact outcomes, and for documenting changes over time in dental records. It can also contribute to preoperative evaluations and anesthesia risk considerations in some settings.
