Mundstykket

Mundstykket is the definite form of the Norwegian term for mouthpiece, the part of a device that is placed near the mouth to supply air or to shape sound. The term is used across different domains, most commonly in connection with musical instruments and smoking devices, but it can also refer more generally to any mouth-facing component of a tool or appliance.

In brass instruments, mundstykket is usually detachable and pressed against the lips during play. The shape and size of the mouthpiece, including the cup, rim, and throat, influence embouchure, response, and tone. Players choose from a range of sizes and materials (such as brass, plastic, or composite) to suit their lip physiology and musical goals. The mouthpiece also affects intonation and dynamic range.

In woodwind instruments, the mouthpiece often includes the reed and ligature (as in clarinets and saxophones), forming the primary interface between the player and the instrument. The tip opening, chamber shape, and ligature tightness together determine attack, air flow, and color of the sound. Different mouthpieces are used to tailor responsiveness for beginners, intermediate players, or professionals.

For smoking pipes and similar devices, mundstykket refers to the end piece placed in the mouth. Materials such as vulcanite, acrylic, or briar are common, and design variations aim for comfort, bite resistance, and ergonomic airflow.
