Multitaskingeating

Multitaskingeating refers to the practice of consuming food while engaged in other activities that compete for attention, such as using a smartphone or computer, watching television, working, driving, or conversing. The term captures a range of scenarios from seated meals with screens to on-the-go snacking during daily tasks.

The phenomenon is widespread in modern societies where screens are integrated into daily routines. Studies show that distractions during a meal are common in workplaces and homes, contributing to irregular meal patterns and shortened meal duration.

Cognitive distraction during eating can alter perception of taste and fullness, reduce memory of what was eaten, and increase the speed of eating. This may weaken satiety cues and lead to higher energy intake at a meal or across the day, though findings vary by setting and measurement.

Health implications depend on context; in the short term, distracted eating can lead to less mindful choices or overconsumption. In some social settings, low-distraction eating may be impractical. There is limited longitudinal evidence on weight outcomes, and results are mixed.
