Multipathhäiriöitä, or multipath interference, is a phenomenon that occurs when a radio signal travels multiple paths between a transmitter and a receiver. This typically happens in environments with many reflective surfaces, such as urban areas with buildings, or indoors with walls and furniture. When the signal travels along these different paths, it arrives at the receiver at slightly different times due to varying path lengths.

These time-delayed versions of the same signal can interfere with each other. Constructive interference occurs when the delayed signal reinforces the direct signal, potentially improving signal strength. However, destructive interference occurs when the delayed signal cancels out parts of the direct signal, leading to a reduction in signal quality. This can manifest as fading, distortion, or complete loss of the signal.

Multipath effects are a significant challenge in wireless communication systems, including Wi-Fi, cellular networks, and satellite navigation. The severity of multipath interference depends on factors such as the signal frequency, the environment's reflectivity, and the distance between the transmitter and receiver. Engineers employ various techniques to mitigate multipath effects. These include using antennas that are less susceptible to multipath, employing equalization techniques within the receiver to compensate for time delays, and using spread spectrum modulation schemes that are more robust to interference. Understanding and addressing multipath interference is crucial for ensuring reliable and efficient wireless communication.
