Multimeedialset

Multimeedialset is a term used in information management to describe a cohesive collection of multimedia assets—such as text, images, audio, video, and interactive elements—that are treated as a single logical unit. The concept appears in digital asset management, multimedia archives, and research data curation, where the emphasis is on linking diverse media under a unified organizational scheme rather than on any single file type.

A multimeedialset typically comprises three core components: the media objects themselves, descriptive and structural metadata, and the relationships that tie assets together. Media objects carry type, format, duration or size, and technical characteristics. Metadata can be descriptive (titles, subjects), structural (how assets relate within a sequence or narrative), and administrative (rights, provenance, preservation information). Structural relationships may map sequences, scenes, slides, or interactive workflows, enabling synchronized playback or curated presentation.

Organization of a multimeedialset can be container-based, using bundles or archives, or metadata-driven, with schemas expressed in XML, JSON, or RDF. Consistency across assets is maintained through synchronized timing, standardized identifiers, and linked metadata, allowing coherent search, retrieval, and rendering in composite views or playlists.

Applications include digital libraries, online courses, media production workflows, and research datasets where integrated access to multiple media types improves analysis and reuse. Interoperability often relies on established metadata standards such as Dublin Core for descriptive data, MPEG-7 for multimedia content descriptions, and domain-specific schemas, enabling cross-system exchange and long-term preservation of the multisource collection.
