MultiROM

MultiROM is a boot manager for Android devices that enables the installation and booting of multiple ROMs on a single device. By patching the boot process, it allows a user to select which ROM to boot at startup, without removing or uninstalling existing installations. The project typically relies on a custom recovery and an unlocked bootloader.

Operation and components: A ROM image set for MultiROM is stored in a dedicated directory on internal or external storage. When a ROM is selected, MultiROM patches the ROM’s boot image and hand-controls to the chosen ROM. The system can maintain separate data areas per ROM to keep settings and apps isolated. MultiROM can also offer a recovery-mode entry for managing ROMs and restoring backups.

Requirements and compatibility: MultiROM requires a device with a bootloader you can unlock and a custom recovery such as CWM or TWRP. Some ROMs and devices may require additional patches or kernel support, and issues can arise with encryption, camera, or proprietary hardware components.

Development status: MultiROM originated as a community project and has seen varying levels of activity across devices. It is most commonly used on older devices or by developers testing multiple ROMs. As with any bootloader modification, users should back up data and understand risks before installation.
