It refers to geographic locations characterized by a mosaic of diverse environmental conditions and resource availabilities within a relatively small, interconnected space. These areas are not defined by a single dominant habitat type but rather by the coexistence and juxtaposition of several distinct ecosystems.

The defining feature of multakasvupaikat is their heterogeneity. This can manifest as a mix of terrestrial and aquatic environments, such as forests bordering wetlands, or meadows adjacent to rocky outcrops. Within these broader categories, variations in soil type, moisture levels, light exposure, and vegetation structure further contribute to the complexity.
