Mullapõhja
Mullapõhja is a term used in Estonian soil science to refer to the organic, humus-rich layer at the surface of many forest and peatland soils. The word combines mull (humus or soil) and põhja (base or bottom), and in practice it often corresponds to the upper organic portion of a soil profile, sometimes aligning with what is called the O-horizon in broader soil classification.
Formation and composition: Mullapõhja develops from accumulated plant litter and other organic debris that gradually undergoes
Ecological and management aspects: Mullapõhja is sensitive to disturbance, drainage, and peat extraction, which can accelerate
Relation to classifications: In Estonian soil nomenclature, mullapõhja is discussed as part of the organic layer
