Muistiallokointi, or memory allocation, is the process of reserving a region of computer memory for a specific program or data structure. This is a fundamental operation in computer programming, enabling software to manage and utilize the available RAM effectively. When a program needs to store information, it requests a block of memory from the operating system. The operating system, in turn, manages a pool of available memory and assigns a suitable chunk to the requesting program.

There are two primary types of memory allocation: static and dynamic. Static allocation occurs at compile time, where memory is reserved for variables whose size is known beforehand and remains fixed throughout the program's execution. This type of allocation is generally efficient but lacks flexibility. Dynamic allocation, on the other hand, happens at runtime. This allows programs to request and release memory as needed, making it ideal for situations where the amount of memory required is not known until the program is running or can vary significantly. Languages like C and C++ provide functions like malloc() and free() for manual dynamic memory management, while languages like Java and Python handle it automatically through garbage collection.

Improper memory allocation can lead to critical issues. Memory leaks occur when allocated memory is no longer needed but is not released back to the system, gradually consuming available RAM. Conversely, buffer overflows happen when a program writes data beyond the boundaries of its allocated memory, potentially corrupting other data or causing the program to crash. Efficient and correct memory allocation is crucial for program stability, performance, and security.
