Msegmentissä is a Finnish term referring to a segment or portion of a media file, particularly in the context of digital audio or video streaming. The concept is closely associated with the development of the M3U playlist format and the MP3 streaming protocol, which were pioneered by the Finnish company DivX Networks (later acquired by Microsoft). The term "msegment" specifically denotes a small, manageable piece of a larger media file, allowing for efficient streaming and playback without requiring the entire file to be downloaded beforehand.

The msegment format was designed to optimize bandwidth usage and reduce latency in online media delivery. By breaking media files into smaller segments, users could start playback sooner and experience fewer interruptions, even with slower internet connections. This approach was particularly influential in the early 2000s when broadband internet was still emerging, and efficient streaming technologies were in high demand.
