Motusvarat is a theoretical construct used in dynamical systems and robotics to describe the stored potential for motion available to a system under energy and actuator constraints. It characterizes how much movement could be induced from the current state before resources become exhausted or limits are reached. The concept is not standardized and appears primarily in exploratory literature as a reserve of motion, analogous in spirit to kinetic energy but defined by controllable motion rather than actual velocity.

Etymology: The name combines motus, Latin for motion, with varat, drawn from Nordic-language terms for reserves, signaling its role as a motion reserve.

Definition and computation: For a system described by ẋ = f(x) + g(x)u with actuator limits and energy budget E, motusvarat V at state x is the maximal instantaneous rate of change of a motion metric s(x) achievable under the constraint that control energy does not exceed E. In practice V is obtained by solving a constrained optimization problem over admissible controls, yielding V = max_{u: energy(u)≤E} ||f(x) + g(x)u|| (or a suitable norm of ẋ).

Applications: Motusvarat provides a direction for energy-aware motion planning and trajectory optimization, particularly for mobile robots and electric vehicles with limited energy reserves. It offers a compact way to compare dynamic reach under resource constraints.
