Motoriproteiinien, commonly known as motor proteins, are a class of proteins that convert chemical energy, typically from ATP hydrolysis, into mechanical work. This mechanical work is essential for a wide range of cellular processes, including intracellular transport, muscle contraction, cell division, and cell motility. They are fundamental to the life and function of all cells.

There are several major families of motor proteins, each with distinct characteristics and functions. Myosins are primarily involved in muscle contraction and the movement of cargo within cells. They typically bind to actin filaments, and their movement along these filaments generates force. Kinesins and dyneins are the other major classes of motor proteins. They operate on microtubules and are responsible for transporting organelles, vesicles, and other cellular components along these tracks. Kinesins generally move towards the plus end of microtubules, while dyneins move towards the minus end.

The function of motor proteins is highly regulated.
