Mosaiikkisuuteen

Mosaiikkisuuteen, often translated as "mosaicism," refers to the presence of two or more populations of cells with distinct genotypes within a single individual. These cell populations originate from a single zygote, meaning the genetic differences arise after fertilization has occurred. This phenomenon can occur spontaneously during embryonic development or be induced by external factors.

There are several types of mosaicism. Post-zygotic mutations are a common cause, where a mutation occurs in a cell after the zygote has formed, and this mutation is then passed on to daughter cells. Chromosomal mosaicism involves the presence of cells with different numbers of chromosomes or structural abnormalities in chromosomes within the same individual. This can happen due to errors during cell division, such as nondisjunction.

The effects of mosaicism depend on several factors, including the type of genetic alteration, the proportion of affected cells, and the specific tissues or organs where these cells are found. In some cases, mosaicism can lead to no noticeable health issues, especially if the altered cells are confined to a small area or do not significantly impact essential functions. However, in other instances, it can manifest as a range of medical conditions, from mild developmental differences to severe genetic disorders. Diagnosing mosaicism often involves genetic testing of multiple tissue samples.
