Mooduste

Mooduste is a small village located in the southeastern part of Harju County, Estonia. It falls under the jurisdiction of Jõelähtme Parish and lies approximately 25 kilometres east of the capital city Tallinn. As of the latest census in 2020, the village has a population of roughly 180 residents who are primarily engaged in local agriculture and small‑scale forestry activities.

The earliest documented mention of Mooduste dates back to the mid‑teenth century, when the settlement appears in the land register of the Bishopric of Riga. The name is derived from the Estonian word “moodus,” meaning a type or form, likely reflecting the valley‑shaped terrain that characterises the area. Throughout its history Mooduste remained a modest agrarian community, with no significant industrial development until the 20th century when a small sawmill was established in 1923.

Key landmarks in Mooduste include the Mooduste Historical Society Museum, which houses artifacts from the village’s agrarian past and an early‑sixteenth‑century farmstead. The surrounding forested hills support a variety of native wildlife and are popular for hiking, especially during the spring and early autumn months.
