Monomolekulaariset, often translated as "monomolecular," refers to a layer composed of a single molecule. This concept is particularly relevant in chemistry and physics, describing phenomena where a substance forms an extremely thin film, only one molecule thick, on a surface or at an interface. Monomolecular layers can form spontaneously or be deliberately created through various techniques.

In the context of surface chemistry, the formation of monomolecular layers is often driven by strong intermolecular forces between the molecules and the substrate. For example, surfactants readily form monomolecular layers at the air-water interface, orienting themselves with their hydrophilic heads in the water and their hydrophobic tails away from it. These layers can significantly alter the properties of the interface, such as reducing surface tension.

The study of monomolecular layers is crucial for understanding phenomena like lubrication, adhesion, and the behavior of thin films. Techniques such as Langmuir-Blodgett troughs are used to deposit precisely controlled monomolecular layers onto solid substrates, enabling the creation of functional surfaces with tailored properties for applications in electronics, sensors, and biomaterials.
