Monografia

A monograph, or monografia in some languages, is a detailed written study on a single specialized subject or aspect of a subject. In academic contexts, it is a standalone scholarly work that presents original research or a comprehensive synthesis of existing knowledge. A monograph is typically authored by a single researcher, though multi-author versions exist, and it aims to contribute new understanding rather than merely survey a topic.

A key distinction is that a monograph focuses tightly on one topic and is usually published as a book or as a discrete volume within a series, rather than as a collection of articles or a textbook. The work is typically structured with a clear introduction that states objectives and significance, a literature review to situate the topic, a methodology section if relevant, a detailed presentation and analysis of findings, and a final conclusion. Supporting elements such as appendices, figures, tables, notes, and a bibliography are common.

The publication process often involves evaluation by editors and, in many cases, formal peer review. Monographs are commonly published by academic presses and are intended to be lasting contributions to the scholarly literature. Etymologically, the term derives from Greek monos, meaning “single,” and gráphein, meaning “to write.” In various languages, the term denotes a substantial, book-length treatment of a single subject, whether as a degree-related project or a standalone publication.
