Monofilamente

Monofilamente refers to monofilaments, which are single, continuous strands produced by extruding a polymer or natural fiber into one filament. The term indicates a single-filament form as opposed to multifilament or braided materials. Monofilaments are valued for their uniform diameter, smooth surface, and predictable mechanical properties.

Manufacturing and materials: Monofilaments are created by melting a polymer and forcing it through a small spinneret, then cooling and drawing the filament to the desired thickness. Common polymers include nylon (polyamide), polyester (PET), polypropylene, and various fluoropolymers. Historically, natural materials such as silk or gut were used, but synthetic polymers now dominate due to strength, durability, and consistency. In textiles and sewing, monofilament threads are used, while in medical contexts monofilament sutures (made from nylon, polypropylene, or similar polymers) are common.

Properties and performance: Compared with multifilament yarns, monofilaments typically offer lower surface area contact, lower friction in some cases, and greater stiffness. They tend to have good chemical resistance and relatively low water absorption, though exact behavior depends on the material. Monofilaments can exhibit memory, returning toward their original shape after bending, which can affect handling. They may be more resistant to snagging but can be less pliable and harder to knot than braided or multifilament alternatives.

Applications: Key uses include fishing lines, sewing threads, and surgical sutures. In fishing, monofilament lines provide transparency and uniform strength. In medicine, monofilament sutures are valued for reduced tissue drag and lower bacterial harboring than braided sutures. Monofilament feeds and filaments are also used in manufacturing and additive processes where a single continuous strand is advantageous.
