Monksoldiers are religious figures who combine martial training with monastic duties, often serving as guardians of their communities, as well as spiritual teachers. The concept has appeared in various cultures, most prominently in East Asia and the Middle East, where monastic orders faced external threats and adopted military skills to protect monasteries and the surrounding populace.

In Chinese history, Buddhist monks known as "Silk and Iron Monks" practiced a blend of Shaolin martial arts and Zen meditation. They were celebrated for their disciplined study of both swordsmanship and scriptures, and for defending their temples against rebel forces during the Tang and Song dynasties. Similarly, in Japan, the Zen monk warrior tradition, exemplified by the Tendai‑based warrior monks of Mount Hiei, combined rigorous ascetic practices with combat proficiency, offering secular teachers powerful political influence during the Kamakura period.

In the Islamic world, certain religious orders, such as the Sufi Tariqa knaves of the 13th‑century, authorized members to become armed defenders when the state was under siege or when Christian crusaders threatened local villages. These defenders remained dedicated to their spiritual vows, engaging in community education and welfare while also wielding the sword.

European knights, though secular, frequently drew inspiration from the idea of a "soldier‑priest" or John of the Order of the Knights Templar, the latter of whom were explicitly charged with the protection of pilgrims on the Holy Land. The Templars were often doctrinally interwoven with monastic rules, embodying the synergy between spirituality and warfare.

The monksoldier role illustrates the intersection of piety and practicality, reinforcing the idea that religious institutions have sometimes adopted protective measures to safeguard their teachings and congregants. Contemporary movements, such as conscientious defenders in conflict zones, echo these historical models by providing a martial dimension to monastic service while maintaining religious commitments.
