Mongryong

Mongryong refers to the male protagonist in the classic Korean folk tale, The Story of Chunhyang. He is typically depicted as a handsome and intelligent young nobleman from Seoul, whose father is a high-ranking government official. Mongryong is sent to study for the state civil service examinations in the capital. While traveling, he stops in Namwon, where he encounters and falls in love with Chunhyang, a beautiful *gisaeng* (female entertainer).

Their love affair is passionate but clandestine, as their social status is a significant barrier. Mongryong promises to return for Chunhyang, but his studies and subsequent success in the civil service exams take him away for an extended period. During his absence, Chunhyang faces severe persecution from the new magistrate, Bang, who attempts to force her into submission. Mongryong's eventual return, disguised as a beggar to test Chunhyang's loyalty, leads to the downfall of Bang and the happy reunion of the lovers. The character of Mongryong embodies the ideal of a devoted lover and a capable scholar who overcomes adversity to be with his beloved.
