Moleshrews

A mole shrew is a member of the subfamily Desmaninae, which are semi-aquatic placental mammals belonging to the order Eulipotyphla. They are superficially similar to shrews but are more closely related to moles. The subfamily Desmaninae is comprised of two extant genera: Desman (or Russian desmans) and the Eurasian water shrew.

These creatures are characterized by their long, sensitive snouts, which they use to forage for invertebrates in muddy or aquatic environments. Their fur is dense and waterproof, aiding in their semi-aquatic lifestyle. They possess webbed feet, which further assist them in swimming. Moleshrews typically inhabit areas near freshwater bodies such as rivers, streams, and lakes, where they build burrows in the banks.

Their diet consists primarily of insects, larvae, crustaceans, and small fish. They are active foragers, using their keen sense of smell and touch to locate prey. The gestation period and litter size vary between species, but they generally have small litters.

The range of moleshrews is primarily Eurasian, with different species found in various parts of Europe and Asia. Conservation statuses vary, with some species facing threats from habitat loss and pollution. Despite their scientific classification and evolutionary relationship to moles and shrews, the common name "moleshrew" reflects their physical resemblance to both.
