Mogera

Mogera is a genus of moles in the family Talpidae, native to East Asia. The genus comprises several species found across Japan, Korea, and parts of China and Taiwan. Members are adapted to a fossorial, or burrowing, lifestyle and have cylindrical bodies, short tails, and strong forelimbs with large claws for digging. Their fur typically lies in a direction that facilitates movement through soil.

Physically they have small eyes and rely on tactile and olfactory senses to navigate underground. Their distribution includes a variety of habitats, from forest floors to agricultural land, where they feed mainly on earthworms and other invertebrates. Reproduction is generally seasonal, with small litters; lifespans vary by species and environmental conditions.

Conservation status varies by region; habitat loss, agricultural practices, and disturbance of soil can threaten local populations. Some Mogera species are of conservation concern in parts of their range.

In popular culture, Mogera, often spelled Moguera in English sources, is the name given to a fictional giant mecha in Toho's Godzilla and related films. It first appeared in The Mysterians (1957) and has appeared in subsequent films as a weapon of the Earth Defense Force.
