Mjukdelstumörer are growths that develop in the body's soft tissues. Soft tissues include muscles, fat, nerves, blood vessels, and the fibrous tissue that connects and supports organs. These tumors can be benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). Benign soft tissue tumors are generally slow-growing and do not spread to other parts of the body. Malignant soft tissue tumors, also known as sarcomas, can grow aggressively and metastasize to distant sites.

The exact cause of most soft tissue tumors is unknown. However, certain factors may increase the risk, including genetic syndromes, exposure to radiation or certain chemicals, and prior radiation therapy. Symptoms can vary widely depending on the tumor's location, size, and type. Often, the first sign is a palpable lump or swelling that may or may not be painful. Other symptoms can include pain, tenderness, limited movement, or even numbness and tingling if the tumor is pressing on a nerve.

Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination, imaging tests such as ultrasound, CT scans, or MRI scans, and a biopsy. A biopsy is crucial for determining whether the tumor is benign or malignant and identifying its specific type. Treatment depends on whether the tumor is benign or malignant. Benign tumors may be surgically removed if they cause symptoms or are of concern. Malignant soft tissue tumors often require a multidisciplinary approach, which may include surgery to remove the tumor, radiation therapy to kill cancer cells, and chemotherapy to kill cancer cells throughout the body. Regular follow-up care is important after treatment to monitor for recurrence.
