Mittarilukemien

Mittarilukemien is Finnish for meter readings, the numerical values shown by measurement devices used to quantify consumption of utilities such as electricity, water, and gas. The term also covers readings from heating meters and other dedicated instruments used in buildings and utilities.

Typical meters include electricity meters, water meters, gas meters, and heat meters. Readings are expressed in units appropriate to the measured quantity, for example, kilowatt-hours (kWh) for electricity, and cubic meters (m3) for water and gas. Heating or district-heating meters may use megawatt-hours (MWh), gigajoules (GJ), or similar energy units.

Collection methods: readings can be taken manually by the customer, building manager, or utility staff, or collected remotely via automated meter reading (AMR) or advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) with smart meters that transmit data automatically at set intervals. Some systems also support vendor-specific or centralized reading platforms. If a reading is unavailable, utilities may estimate consumption based on past usage or load profiles.

Uses: the readings form the basis for billing for utilities and for monitoring energy or resource use. They are used in energy management, leak detection, and efficiency analysis within homes, businesses, and municipalities. In multi-occupancy buildings, readings may be aggregated for each unit or apartment and used to allocate costs fairly.

Accuracy and privacy: correct installation and regular verification help ensure accurate readings. Consumers should report suspected errors. Meter data is personal information when linked to a specific tenancy or user and is protected by privacy regulations in many jurisdictions.
