Mistwatch

Mistwatch is a hill fortress and weather observatory perched on the crest of Mistwatch Ridge above the Mist Vale in the northern highlands of Eldoria. The site combines defensive stonework with early meteorological equipment, reflecting its long-standing role as a frontier outpost for the Gatekeepers, an order responsible for monitoring fog passes and cloud corridors.

The complex comprises a central keep, a square curtain wall, and a tall beacon tower that houses barometers, hygrometers, and signal devices. Access is via a steep switchback path, and the position offers views across the valley. In clear conditions the beacon and lamp can be seen for miles, marking weather changes and migrations of mist.

Mistwatch has a long history of strategic importance. It was established in the 14th century, fortified during the Storm Wars, and changed hands several times before being restored by the Gatekeepers in the 17th century. After a period of decline in the 18th century, it was revived in the 20th century as a research and preservation site and is now managed by the Mistwatch Conservancy.

Today Mistwatch serves as a cultural landmark and a site for atmospheric research and eco-tourism. Public tours are offered during dry months, and researchers monitor mist formation, wind patterns, and light scattering. In local folklore, Mistwatch is linked to the Veil, a legendary fog that is said to speak to those who listen.
