Misshandel

Misshandel is a criminal offense in Sweden defined in the Swedish Penal Code (Brottsbalken). It refers to intentionally or negligently causing bodily harm or illness to another person through violence or other means. It covers acts such as striking, pushing, choking, or other conduct that injures health. The offense is categorized into degrees: ringa misshandel (minor), misshandel (ordinary), and grov misshandel (gross or aggravated). The classification depends on factors such as the extent of injury, the duration of harm, whether weapons were used, the victim's vulnerability (e.g., children, elderly, disabled), whether the act occurred in a domestic setting, repetition, and the perpetrator's intent.

In ordinary cases, the act may be punishable with imprisonment or fines, with higher penalties for aggravated forms. Ringa misshandel typically carries the least severe penalties, while grov misshandel entails more severe punishment due to factors like serious injuries, repeated offenses, or particularly dangerous methods. The state prosecutes based on evidence gathered by police and prosecutors; the courts decide charges and sentence. In domestic violence contexts, protective measures such as restraining orders may be issued for the victim's safety.
