Other factors are rapid or casual speech, hearing difficulties, fatigue, and, in some cases, speech disorders. Mispronunciations frequently involve substituting sounds, altering stress patterns, or omitting syllables; for example, pronunciations differences around words like schedule or nuclear are common across dialects and can be labeled as mispronunciations depending on the audience.

The social and communicative implications vary. Mispronunciations can hinder understanding or lead to judgments about competence, but they can also reflect regional or social identity and be tolerated within a dialect.
