Mirabilis

Mirabilis is a genus of flowering plants in the family Nyctaginaceae. It comprises numerous species native to the Americas, with Mirabilis jalapa, commonly known as the four o'clock flower or the Marvel of Peru, being the best known in cultivation.

Plants are herbaceous perennials or annuals with erect, branching stems and opposite leaves. The flowers are trumpet- or funnel-shaped, usually five-lobed, and open in the late afternoon or evening, often emitting fragrance at night. Blossom colors range from white and yellow to red, pink, and purple; many cultivars are multicolored.

Distribution and habitat: Native from the southwestern United States to Argentina, mirabilis species are widely grown as ornamentals and have become naturalized in warm regions around the world. They prefer sunny, well-drained soils and can tolerate some drought; in cooler climates they are typically grown as annuals.

Etymology and taxonomy: The genus name Mirabilis derives from the Latin mirabilis, meaning wonderful or marvelous; the group was established by Carl Linnaeus in the 18th century. A number of species are grown in gardens, and several form tuberous roots in their perennial forms.

In horticulture, M. jalapa is especially popular for its easy cultivation and ability to reseed. Other species include Mirabilis longiflora and Mirabilis multiflora, among others, which vary in flower size and form.
