Blossom

Blossom refers to the reproductive structures of flowering plants, and in general use to the period during which a plant develops flowers. The term can describe both the flowers themselves and the flowering phase of a plant, particularly in fruit trees that produce conspicuous blossoms each spring.

Blossoms typically include petals, sepals, and the plant’s reproductive organs, such as stamens and pistils. Petals are often colorful and scented to attract pollinators. Pollination, followed by fertilization, leads to fruit development in many species. After pollination, blossoms may wither and fall as the plant transitions energy toward fruit and seed formation.

Ecology and horticulture emphasize the timing and pattern of flowering. In temperate climates, many fruit trees—such as apples, cherries, and plums—blossom in spring, creating a short window for pollinators. Ornamental blossoms, including cherry blossoms and other flowering trees, are valued for aesthetic and cultural reasons. The success of fruit set depends on adequate pollination, favorable temperatures, and sufficient resources like water and nutrients. Some cultivars produce double or otherwise ornamental blossoms that prioritize appearance over fruit production.

As a verb, blossom means to come into bloom or to flourish. It can describe a plant reaching full flowering, or be used metaphorically to depict growth, development, or thriving conditions for a person, idea, or community.
