Miljöpartiet

Miljöpartiet de Gröna, commonly referred to as Miljöpartiet or the Green Party, is a political party in Sweden focused on environmental sustainability, climate action and social justice. Founded in 1981 by activists from environmental, anti-nuclear and peace movements, it positions itself as a participant in mainstream politics. The party's program emphasizes reducing greenhouse gas emissions, protecting biodiversity, expanding renewable energy, and promoting sustainable transport, energy efficiency, and a circular economy. It also champions equality, human rights and inclusive immigration policies.

Miljöpartiet has participated in Swedish national elections since the 1980s and has been represented in the Riksdag since the late 1980s. It has joined governing coalitions as a junior partner on several occasions, most notably in the government led by the Social Democrats from 2014 to 2019. Its policy stance combines environmental goals with social policy and civil liberties, and the party generally supports European integration and international cooperation on climate and development issues. It has traditionally advocated a gradual phase-out of nuclear power in favor of renewables, though policy positions have evolved with changing circumstances.

Internationally, Miljöpartiet is a member of the European Green Party and the Global Greens, cooperating on climate, biodiversity and peace initiatives. The party emphasizes grassroots participation and internal democracy, with local and regional chapters playing a central role in its decision-making. Miljöpartiet continues to seek influence in Swedish politics through environmental and social justice agendas.
