Miljøkontroller, or environmental controls, refer to systems and processes that monitor and regulate environmental parameters to ensure safety, comfort, and regulatory compliance in facilities such as buildings, factories, and laboratories. The term covers both passive monitoring and active control actions that adjust conditions in real time. In practice, environmental controls may involve building management systems, industrial process controls, and environmental monitoring programs designed to maintain target conditions and detect deviations.

Core components include sensors measuring temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide and other air quality indicators, as well as pressure, noise, and vibration. Actuators such as valves, dampers, fans, and heating or cooling units execute control actions. The control logic runs on PLCs, DCS, or building management systems, employing strategies from simple on/off rules to PID or model predictive control. Data logging, alarms, and visualization support operators and compliance reporting.

Applications span office buildings, hospitals, schools, and data centers for indoor climate management; manufacturing and processing plants for product quality and regulatory compliance; greenhouses and agricultural facilities; and environmental laboratories or waste treatment plants where process parameters and emissions must be kept within limits.

Regulatory and standards contexts shape implementation. Many jurisdictions require monitoring of ventilation rates, air quality, and emissions, and organizations may pursue ISO 14001 environmental management and ISO 50001 energy management. Cybersecurity, data integrity, and maintainability are increasingly emphasized for connected control systems. Audits and traceability of setpoints and events are common obligations.

Current trends include greater integration with other building and operations technology, advances in IoT sensing, cloud-based analytics, and artificial intelligence for anomaly detection and predictive maintenance. The goal is to improve energy efficiency, occupant comfort, and environmental performance while maintaining reliability and safety.
