Miligramy

Miligramy are a unit of mass in the metric system equal to one thousandth of a gram. The symbol is mg. In SI, the gram is a derived unit, and the milligram is a convenient mass unit for small quantities. One milligram equals 0.001 gram or 1e-6 kilogram, and it is also equal to 1000 micrograms. In Polish, miligramy is the plural form; in English, the plural is milligrams.

Miligramy are widely used in medicine, pharmacology, nutrition, chemistry, and laboratory science to express dosages, concentrations, and sample masses. Medication dosages are typically specified in milligrams, such as a tablet containing 325 mg of active ingredient, or a vitamin supplement with 500 mg per dose. For liquids, concentration is often expressed as mg per milliliter (mg/mL).

Measurement of milligram-scale masses requires precision equipment. Analytical balances and microbalances can weigh in the milligram and sub-milligram range, while more routine scales used in pharmacies or hospitals measure in the milligram to tens of milligrams with appropriate accuracy. In reporting, mg is often paired with volume or mass units, for example mg/kg for dosage relative to body weight, or mg/mL for solutions.

Practical notes include paying attention to concentration and dose accuracy, especially in medical contexts. While milligrams describe mass, some preparations are measured by volume or by the amount of active ingredient per dose, requiring careful reading of labels and concentrations. The milligram remains a standard unit across science and healthcare for expressing small but clinically significant quantities.
