Mikrokrople

Mikrokosmos, also referred to as Mikrokrope, is a literary work by Hungarian composer Béla Bartók. Written in 1936, it is a recital featuring 94 etudes for the piano. The album consists of 25 piano pieces, each dedicated to a different artist, composer, or musician of importance to Bartók.

The etudes in Mikrokosmos range in difficulty, spanning from simple exercises to more complex and intricate compositions. These pieces draw inspiration from various musical styles, including folk music, jazz, and Baroque compositions. Bartók categorized the etudes into six volumes, which were published individually from 1949 to 1976.

Between 1938 and 1944, Bartók made significant adjustments to the original etudes, forming distinct editions. The most notable alteration is the transference of three pieces from Mikrokosmos to the earlier composition String Quartet No. 4. Furthermore, the complete Mikrokosmos variant differs from earlier editions.

Bartók considered Mikrokosmos to be pedagogical, his aim being for it to be a versatile compendium of practice pieces, compiled for casual and, more specifically, professional study.
