Mikrodeletsioonile refers to a chromosomal abnormality where a small segment of a chromosome is lost. These deletions are too small to be visible under a standard microscope and are typically identified through specialized genetic testing techniques such as chromosomal microarray analysis (CMA) or fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). Unlike large-scale chromosomal deletions that can cause severe developmental issues, microdeletions often result in a range of phenotypes that can vary significantly between individuals, even with the same deletion.

The clinical manifestations of microdeletions are diverse and depend on the specific genes located within the deleted region. Some common microdeletion syndromes include DiGeorge syndrome (22q11.2 deletion), Williams syndrome (7q11.23 deletion), and Prader-Willi and Angelman syndromes (15q11-q13 deletion). Symptoms can encompass intellectual disability, developmental delays, distinctive facial features, congenital heart defects, behavioral problems, and an increased risk of certain medical conditions.

Diagnosis of a microdeletion is crucial for understanding a child's developmental challenges, guiding appropriate medical management, and providing genetic counseling to families. While many microdeletions occur spontaneously, some can be inherited.
