It is a neologism combining elements meaning “between” and “operational/surgical,” used to discuss planning, monitoring, and continuity of care across staged interventions.

Conceptually, it covers clinical decisions about timing of subsequent surgeries, inter-surgical optimization of patient condition, interim diagnostic tests, image review, medication management, and communication among surgical teams, anesthesiologists, radiologists, and primary care providers.

Applications include oncological surgery with staged resections, transplant planning, orthopedic procedures requiring consecutive operations, and pediatric surgery where growth or response to initial intervention necessitates follow-up procedures. In health informatics, midzymidzyoperacyjnych refers to data elements and workflows that link perioperative records across operations, enabling continuity of care and outcome tracking.

Challenges include inconsistent terminology, fragmentation of health records, and variability in care pathways across institutions. Effective implementation relies on standardized data schemas, interoperable electronic health records, and clear clinical governance to ensure patient safety and measurable outcomes. The concept remains mainly descriptive and methodological rather than a separate clinical specialty.
