Microperiods

Microperiods refer to very short or intermittent instances of bleeding that can occur outside of a person's regular menstrual cycle. These bleeding episodes are typically lighter than a normal period and can last for a day or two, or even just a few hours. They are distinct from spotting, which is usually a much smaller amount of blood and may be more brown or pinkish in color.

The causes of microperiods can be varied and depend on an individual's reproductive health. Hormonal fluctuations are a common reason, as these can affect the uterine lining and lead to irregular shedding. Factors such as stress, significant changes in diet or exercise, or rapid weight loss or gain can disrupt hormonal balance and contribute to microperiods. Certain medical conditions, including polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or thyroid disorders, can also play a role.

In some cases, microperiods may be an early sign of pregnancy, particularly an ectopic pregnancy. They can also be associated with perimenopause, the transition period leading up to menopause. The use of hormonal birth control, such as pills, patches, or implants, can also result in irregular bleeding patterns, including microperiods. Intrauterine devices (IUDs) can sometimes cause changes in bleeding.
