Micromorphologie

Micromorphologie, or micromorphology, is the study of the micro-scale structure and fabric of soils, sediments, rocks, and certain manufactured materials. It focuses on how minerals, organic matter, pore spaces, and micro-aggregates are arranged within a sample and how these features reflect processes of formation, alteration, and post-depositional change. In French usage the term is common in soil science and archaeology, while in English-language literature it is often described as micromorphology.

Techniques rely on preparing thin sections or impregnated blocks that preserve the natural pore network and fabric. These samples are examined under optical microscopes, typically with polarized light, to identify microstructures such as pore channels, micro-aggregates, root traces, and pedogenic features. Complementary methods include scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive spectroscopy for detailed mineral identification and texture analysis. Descriptions follow standardized vocabularies for microstructure and fabric, enabling comparisons across sites and studies.

Applications span multiple disciplines. In soil science, micromorphology helps interpret soil formation processes, past environmental conditions, and the movement of water and solutes at the micro-scale. In archaeology, micromorphological analysis is used to reconstruct site formation processes, human activity, and post-depositional alterations by examining the soil and sediment matrix and inclusions like ash, bone, or artifacts. In geology and materials science, microstructure studies inform properties such as porosity, permeability, strength, and durability by linking micro-features to macroscopic behavior.

Limitations include the need for meticulous sample preparation, potential subjectivity in interpretation, and the necessity to integrate microstructural observations with macroscopic data and contextual information for robust conclusions.
