Micromachinations

Micromachinations refers to the processes and technologies used to create structures and devices with feature sizes in the micrometer range. These dimensions are typically between 1 and 1000 micrometers. The field draws heavily from microelectronics manufacturing, adapting techniques like photolithography, etching, and deposition to fabricate mechanical components. These components can include gears, sensors, actuators, and intricate three-dimensional structures.

The primary goal of micromachinations is to produce miniaturized devices that can perform specific functions. This miniaturization allows for the creation of systems that are smaller, lighter, and often more power-efficient than their macroscopic counterparts. Applications span a wide range of industries, including medical devices (e.g., micro-needles, surgical tools), automotive (e.g., sensors for airbags and engine control), telecommunications (e.g., optical switches), and consumer electronics.

Several fabrication techniques fall under the umbrella of micromachinations. LIGA, which stands for Lithographie, Galvanoformung, Abformung (Lithography, Electroplating, Molding), is a prominent method for creating high-aspect-ratio microstructures. Other techniques include deep reactive-ion etching (DRIE) for silicon-based devices and micro-molding for polymers. The continuous advancement in micromachination allows for ever-increasing complexity and functionality in these tiny engineered systems.
