Metyylimetakrylaattirepeämyksiksi, often shortened to MMA, is a monomer used in the production of various polymers. It is a clear, colorless liquid with a characteristic acrid odor. MMA is primarily known as the building block for poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), commonly known by trade names such as Plexiglas and Lucite. PMMA is a transparent thermoplastic known for its optical clarity, rigidity, and weather resistance. It finds applications in a wide range of products, including acrylic sheets, lenses, automotive parts, signage, and dental materials.

The polymerization of MMA can be initiated by free radicals, heat, or light. This process can occur through bulk polymerization, solution polymerization, suspension polymerization, or emulsion polymerization, each method yielding polymers with slightly different properties suitable for specific uses. In addition to PMMA, MMA is also copolymerized with other monomers to create materials with tailored characteristics. For instance, copolymers of MMA with styrene can enhance impact resistance, while those with other acrylates might improve flexibility.

MMA is also a component in some adhesives and coatings. Its ability to polymerize quickly and form hard, durable films makes it valuable in certain industrial and consumer products. While generally considered safe when handled properly, MMA is a volatile organic compound and can cause irritation to the skin, eyes, and respiratory tract. Appropriate safety precautions, including adequate ventilation and personal protective equipment, are necessary when working with this chemical.
