Metsäojitusta
Metsäojitus, or forest drainage, is a silvicultural practice aimed at improving forest growth on waterlogged soils. This involves the construction and maintenance of ditches to lower the groundwater table. The primary goal is to create more favorable conditions for tree roots by increasing aeration and reducing the prevalence of anaerobic conditions, which can stunt growth and lead to root rot.
Historically, forest drainage became widespread in Nordic countries, particularly Finland and Sweden, during the latter half
While forest drainage has been linked to increased timber yields, it has also raised environmental concerns.
