Metricsviews

A metricsview typically specifies the metric identifiers, namespaces, labels or dimensions, data types and units, time range, and preferred resolution, along with any derived or alertable metrics.

The core components of a metricsview include the data sources (telemetry collectors, time-series databases, or event stores), a metric schema (name, type, unit, labels), a query and aggregation layer (filters, groupings, rollups, downsampling), a transformation or enrichment stage (calculation of derived metrics, annotations), and a rendering or presentation layer (dashboards, tables, charts). Metadata such as ownership, version, and access controls are often attached to support governance and security. A metricsview may also define access policies, lineage, and compatibility requirements with downstream tools.

Capabilities commonly associated with metricsviews include cross-mource querying, time-based aggregations, grouping by dimensions, historical comparisons, and integration with alerting or notification systems. They are used in cloud platforms, on-premises observability stacks, and IoT or application monitoring to provide reusable, shareable views of metric data. By encapsulating metric definitions and presentation logic, metricsviews facilitate consistency, reuse, and governance across teams and tools.

Design considerations for metricsviews center on naming and schema governance, performance (caching and pre-aggregation), privacy and security, versioning, and compatibility with existing time-series backends.
