Methanone

Methanone is a chemical compound with the formula CH3COCH3. It is the simplest ketone, characterized by a carbonyl group bonded to two methyl groups. Methanone is commonly known by its trivial name, acetone. It is a colorless, volatile, and flammable liquid with a distinct pungent odor.

Acetone is widely used as a solvent due to its ability to dissolve many plastics and synthetic fibers. It is a common component in nail polish removers and is also used in the cleaning and degreasing of various surfaces. In industrial settings, acetone is employed in the production of plastics, synthetic fibers, and other chemicals. It is a key intermediate in the synthesis of methyl methacrylate, a precursor to Plexiglas.

Naturally, acetone is found in small amounts in plants, trees, and volcanic gases. It is also produced in the human body as a byproduct of fat metabolism. While generally considered to have low toxicity, prolonged exposure to high concentrations of acetone vapor can cause irritation to the eyes, nose, and throat. Ingestion of large quantities can lead to central nervous system depression.
