Meterbasert

Meterbasert is a Norwegian term used to describe systems, processes, or pricing that operate based on measurements collected by meters or sensors. The term is formed from meter (measurement instrument) and basert (based). It is used in a variety of sectors to emphasize that decisions or charges depend on actual measured data rather than estimates or fixed rates.

In practice, meterbasert approaches are common in utilities, where electricity, water, or gas consumption is billed according to meter readings, often collected remotely by smart meters. They are also used in property management, building automation, and industrial processes to regulate energy use or resource allocation based on real-time data. In environmental monitoring and agriculture, meterbasert data from soil moisture, rainfall, or air quality sensors informs irrigation, forecasting, and governance decisions.

The adoption of meterbasert systems can improve accuracy, efficiency, and fairness by aligning costs and actions with actual usage or conditions. However, they require reliable metering infrastructure, data management, and cybersecurity, and can raise privacy or affordability concerns when consumption data is highly granular.
