Metallityöskentely

Metallityöskentely, or metalworking, is a broad category of manufacturing processes involving the shaping and manipulation of metal. It encompasses a wide range of techniques used to transform raw metal into functional or decorative objects. These processes can be broadly divided into forming, cutting, joining, and finishing.

Forming operations change the shape of a metal workpiece without removing material. Examples include forging, where metal is heated and hammered into shape; rolling, where metal is passed through rollers to reduce its thickness or create a specific profile; and stamping, where a die is used to press a pattern or shape into the metal.

Cutting processes involve removing material to achieve a desired shape. This includes machining operations like turning, milling, and drilling, which use cutting tools to remove chips of metal. Sawing and shearing are also cutting methods used for separating metal.

Joining techniques are used to connect two or more pieces of metal. Welding, brazing, and soldering are common methods that create a strong bond by melting and fusing the metal. Mechanical fastening, using bolts, rivets, or screws, is another way to join metal components.

Metal finishing processes are applied to the surface of the metal to improve its appearance, durability, or corrosion resistance. These can include painting, plating with other metals, polishing, or anodizing.

Historically, metalworking has been fundamental to human technological development, from the Bronze Age and Iron Age to modern industrial manufacturing. It remains a vital industry today, producing everything from intricate jewelry to massive structural components.
