Metallilevy

Metallilevy, commonly referred to as sheet metal, refers to a flat, two-dimensional metal product whose thickness is small compared with its length and width. It is produced by rolling metal into sheets and is typically supplied in coils or cut to size. Common thickness ranges from about 0.2 mm to 6 mm for general engineering, though thicker sheets exist for structural uses. Materials include carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, copper, brass, bronze and titanium, each offering different strength, ductility and corrosion resistance.

Production and formability: Sheet metal is manufactured mainly by rolling, either hot or cold. Cold-worked sheets have tighter tolerances and smoother surfaces, while hot-rolled sheets are more economical and formable. Additional processes include annealing, pickling and surface finishing. Sheets can be further processed by punching, shearing, bending, stamping, deep drawing and welding to form components and assemblies.

Surface finishes and coatings: Uncoated sheets may be left as-rolled or treated. Common finishes include galvanized coating for steel, anodizing for aluminum, and painted or powder-coated surfaces. Polished, brushed and patterned finishes are also used for aesthetic purposes.

Applications and considerations: Metallilevy is used in construction (facades, roofing, ductwork), transportation (body panels, chassis parts), electrical enclosures, household appliances, furniture and signage, among other uses. It is selected to meet mechanical requirements, formability and environmental exposure.

Standards and sustainability: Thickness and tolerances are defined by national and international standards (such as EN and ASTM). Sheet metal is highly recyclable, and recycling reduces energy use and the demand for raw materials.
