Metakrülaatmonomeer

Metakrülaatmonomeer, often shortened to MMA, is an organic compound with the formula CH2=C(CH3)COOCH3. It is a colorless, volatile liquid with a characteristic acrid odor. MMA is a type of ester and is the monomer used in the production of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), a transparent thermoplastic commonly known as acrylic glass or Plexiglas.

The production of metakrülaatmonomeer typically involves several chemical processes, with the acetone cyanohydrin route being a common method. This process starts with acetone and hydrogen cyanide to form acetone cyanohydrin, which is then reacted with sulfuric acid and methanol to yield MMA. Other methods, such as direct oxidation of isobutylene, are also employed.

Metakrülaatmonomeer is a key building block in the polymer industry. Its primary application is as a precursor to PMMA, which finds widespread use in applications requiring transparency, impact resistance, and weatherability. These include automotive parts, optical lenses, signage, construction materials, and medical devices.
