Metadatapolicies

Metadatapolicies are formal rules and guidelines that govern the creation, management, use, and sharing of metadata within an organization or system. They establish ownership, accountability, and principles to ensure metadata remains accurate, discoverable, interoperable, and compliant with applicable laws and policies.

These policies typically cover standards and schemas (for example Dublin Core, schema.org), controlled vocabularies, data dictionaries, and quality metrics. They define roles such as data stewards, metadata librarians, and data custodians, and outline processes for metadata capture, validation, enrichment, versioning, and deprecation. They also address metadata lifecycle management from creation to retirement.

Privacy, security, and provenance are core concerns. Metadatapolicies specify how personal data within metadata is handled, including access controls, masking or anonymization where appropriate, retention periods, and audit trails for changes. They may also require recording metadata provenance to establish its origin and history.

Interoperability and sharing are commonly emphasized to support cross-system compatibility. Policies promote standardization, crosswalks and mappings between schemas, licensing terms, and attribution requirements. They define conditions for external sharing, including public access and collaboration with partners, while balancing rights andResponsibilities.

Governance, compliance, and enforcement provide the oversight framework. Metadatapolicies align with legal and regulatory requirements, such as data protection and copyright, and may address sector-specific rules. They specify monitoring, reporting, training, and consequences for noncompliance, as well as mechanisms for policy review and updates.
