Mesylointireagenssi refers to a chemical reagent used in organic chemistry to convert alcohols into mesylates. A mesylate is an ester of methanesulfonic acid, often represented by the formula CH3SO3R, where R is an alkyl or aryl group. The mesyl group (CH3SO2-) is a good leaving group, making mesylates valuable intermediates in various synthetic transformations.

The most common mesylointireagenssi is methanesulfonyl chloride (MsCl), also known as mesyl chloride, with the chemical formula CH3SO2Cl. Another related reagent is methanesulfonic anhydride ((CH3SO2)2O), often referred to as Ms2O. These reagents react with alcohols, typically in the presence of a base like triethylamine or pyridine. The base serves to neutralize the hydrochloric acid or methanesulfonic acid produced during the reaction, driving the equilibrium towards product formation.

The reaction proceeds via nucleophilic attack of the alcohol's oxygen atom on the sulfur atom of the mesylointireagenssi, followed by the elimination of a chloride ion or methanesulfonate anion. The resulting mesylate can then undergo nucleophilic substitution reactions, elimination reactions, or other transformations.
