Mereväes

Mereväes is the Estonian Navy, the naval warfare branch of the Estonian Defence Forces. It is responsible for conducting maritime operations in Estonian territorial waters and beyond. The primary mission of the Mereväes is to ensure the security of Estonia's maritime borders, participate in international maritime operations, and contribute to the defense of the Baltic Sea.

The Mereväes was re-established in 1993 following Estonia's independence. It has since undergone significant development and modernization, acquiring new vessels and enhancing its capabilities. The navy operates a fleet that includes minehunters, patrol boats, and auxiliary vessels. Its key tasks include mine countermeasures, maritime surveillance, search and rescue operations, and the protection of vital maritime infrastructure.

The Mereväes actively participates in NATO and European Union maritime exercises and operations, contributing to collective security. It also cooperates closely with the navies of neighboring countries, particularly Latvia and Lithuania, within the framework of the Baltic Naval Squadron (BALTRON). Personnel training is a high priority, with a focus on developing skilled officers and enlisted sailors capable of operating modern naval technology and participating in complex international missions. The Mereväes plays a crucial role in maintaining Estonia's maritime sovereignty and contributing to regional stability.
